High-end hardware is really only necessary if you're seriously into combat, or plan to use VR. So unless you've got an absolute potato of a PC, I wouldn't worry about it. On low settings it runs pretty well on Intel's latest integrated graphics. I easily got 60 fps on high settings on a laptop with a GTX 1050 Max-Q, which is pretty much bottom of the barrel as gaming laptops go (it's actually a multimedia laptop). The game is pretty lightweight in terms of hardware requirements. The Steam version regularly goes on sale for US$7.49, and the Epic version was given away for free a few months back. The catch is that I've never seen the Frontier version cost less than US$29.99. You can run it by itself, or start it via Steam (I don't think Epic allows third party games). If you buy from Frontier, you get a standalone copy of the game. You need to start the game from Steam/Epic, and they will talk to Frontier's servers and validate that you own the game. Elite: Dangerous gives you everything you need to love it, but you do have to want to engage with it. The Steam and Epic versions are tied to your Steam/Epic account.
